Manchester United News: Erik Ten Hag Issues Warning to United Players in Address to Fans Ahead of New Season
Ten Hag led a revival at the Amsterdam club based on Johan Cruyff’s ideals before leaving for United. He formerly served as the reserve team coach at Bayern Munich, where he was supervised by Pep Guardiola.
However, Ten Hag is realistic enough to see that he will only be able to buy the Reds enough time if he can succeed with most of the group he was given.
Ten Hag retorted, “You are talking like a Dutchman,” when questioned about the necessity of winning with a swagger. They constantly strive to play fantastic football.
“I’m here because of that, and I like it. You’re being so aggressive, courageous, and adventurous because you want to win. You want to win in a specific way. I believe that is what the Manchester United culture is, and we want to bring it in.
However, if you cannot win in a morally upright or amusing manner, you still have to win. That is the mindset and attitude we introduce. There will occasionally be games that you won’t play well in, but you still have to win.
In the ten years since Sir Alex Ferguson retired, the club has been at war, and Ten Hag’s first responsibility is to bring peace to it. By winning titles, Ferguson was able to contain the fans’ outspoken animosity toward the Glazer family, who controls the club.
The club’s failure to deliver in the transfer market this summer has left the Dutchman with challenges to solve both on and off the field. However, the unhappiness has evolved into an open rebellion in recent seasons.
Argentine defender Lisandro Martinez was acquired by United for £51 million from Ajax, and Dutch left-back Tyrell Malacia was acquired for £13.5 million from Feyenoord. Christian Eriksen will improve Ten Hag’s midfield, but Frenkie De Jong, who was the top target, resisted leaving Barcelona until his unpaid wages of £17 million were paid.
The frustrations felt in the Stretford End are mirrored in Cristiano Ronaldo’s constant displays of disapproval. “I have to do everything,” said Ten Hag, “together with the coaching staff and the players, to bring success back to the field.”
“Everything begins on the practice field’s pitch. You must provide every day your best effort. You’ll then grow both personally and collectively.”
“I believe it is obvious that this stadium is designed to attract a fight, I anticipate effective cooperation (from the fans). However, we must provide an example on the field. The fans will like it and the fight will return if we have the appropriate mindset. I define it as working hard and being fearless.”
