Real Madrid news: Karim Benzema Says He Changed His Game After Cristiano Ronaldo Left the Club
Real Madrid news: Karim Benzema has revealed he changed his game after Cristiano Ronaldo left the club.
Ronaldo left Real Madrid for Juventus in 2018, and Benzema has since shouldered more responsibility of scoring the goals for the Spanish side. Benzema upped his game in the seasons since, and has become one of the best players in the world.
Benzema, who scored only 12 goals for Real Madrid in the 2017/18 season, racked up an impressive 30 goals in the next season when the Spanish side were without Ronaldo. The French striker has managed 27, 30 and 44 goals respectively in the three seasons since.
He also played a key role in Real Madrid’s Champions League title win last season, scoring 15 goals in the competition. He is also widely considered as the favourite to win the next Ballon d’Or.
Benzema said he had a different style of play when Ronaldo was at Real Madrid. The 34-year-old also said Ronaldo helped him on and off the pitch. Benzema added that after Ronaldo left Real Madrid, it was time to change his game.
He added: “He really helped me on and off the pitch. But at that time, I did know that I could do more, and when he left, it was the time to change my game, change my ambitions and I am doing that well at the moment.”
Real Madrid will begin their La Liga campaign with an away match vs Almeria on August 15 at 1:30 am Indian Standard Time. They then play another two away matches – vs Celta Vigo and Espanyol – before hosting Real Betis in their first home game of the season on September 3.
