Chelsea Transfer News: Edouard Mendy Rejects Chelsea’s First Offer

After grinding through the early stages of his career, Mendy helped Reims to get promoted to Ligue 1. The custodian made his Ligue 1 with Reims and kept fourteen clean sheets in his first season.

Mendy then joined fellow Ligue 1 club Rennes. The goalkeeper carried his brilliant form and helped Rennes finish third in Ligue 1.

Meanwhile, Chelsea was struggling with goalkeeper issues as their big money signing Kepa Arrizabalaga was having a very poor run of form. The Blues strengthened their goalkeeping position by roping in Mendy. Since joining the club, Mendy became Chelsea’s numero uno. He was brilliant with Chelsea as Thomas Tuchel’s side won the Champions League. The Senegalese International won UEFA and FIFA’s Goalkeeper of the Year award.

Even after his heroics with the gloves, Chelsea’s custodian is one of the lowest earners of the club. With Mendy’s current deal expiring in 2025, Chelsea now wants to secure the custodian on a longer contract.

Hence, they made an offer to Mendy for the renewal of his contract. However, Chelsea’s offer has been deemed too low by Mendy’s camp and was rejected.

According to Evening Standard, Chelsea’s opening offer for Mendy was even lower than what his backup Kepa (£190,000 per week) earns at the club.

Chelsea have recently tied down one of their best assets Reece James with a very big contract. Keeping in mind, Mendy’s contributions to the club, Chelsea will surely have to pay more than what they are offering now.

However, recently Mendy has been criticised for his poor form and was in the midst of a controversial decision in their last match.

Chelsea manager Tuchel though have shown his trust in his numero uno and said, “Somebody sent me an interesting quote about Napoleon, who asked his generals that they should not only have the best quality but also that they are lucky generals. This is also what you need from leaders and goalkeepers, and that they have a kind of momentum in which if they make a little mistake it’s not punished.”

Meanwhile, Chelsea’s second-choice goalkeeper Kepa was on the verge of leaving Stamford Bridge in this season. He was heavily linked with Napoli. However, the deal never materialised.

While addressing this, the Chelsea gaffer has expressed that Kepa but didn’t get any satisfying offer from any other club and the German has always wanted him to stay as Blue.
