Chelsea Manager Sacked: Who can replace Thomas Tuchel?
The German manager joined a struggling Chelsea in January 2021 as a replacement for Frank Lampard.
Upon arriving at Stamford Bridge Tuchel changed Chelsea’s season drastically and made them a force in Europe. The German led the Blues to their second Champions League title by beating Manchester City in the finals. The following season Chelsea reached the finals of both the Carabao Cup and FA Cup and finished third in the EPL.
However, this time around Chelsea did not have a good start to their season. The Blues have lost two of their first six matches in the EPL. On top of that, they suffered an agonizing loss in their Champions League campaign opener against GNK Dinamo Zagreb. Following this poor result, Chelsea’s new owner Todd Boehly sacked Tomas Tuchel. With Tuchel gone, let’s take a look at the possible candidates who can replace the German manager
Known as one of the best English managers of his generation, Graham Potter started his managerial career with Swedish side Ostersund, He spent seven years with the club and took them to the Swedish first division for the first time in the history of the club.
After his successful spell with Ostersund, Potter managed Swansea City before making his Premier League debut with Brighton. Upon joining Brighton, Potter showed his brilliant managerial skill of working around tight budgets. Potter’s teams are known for their aggressive gameplay and slick passing. However, Potter has never worked with a big team like Chelsea, so it will be interesting to see how he handles the pressure.
Argentine coach Mauricio Pochettino is another favourite on the long list. After retiring from football, Pochettino started his managerial career at the Spanish club Espanyol. During his time in Spain, he turned Espanhyol from a struggling team into one of the bests in the league.
Pochettino then moved to Southampton and helped the Saints to finish eighth in the EPL table. The Argentine then managed Chelsea’s rival Tottenham and made them one of the best in Europe. However, unfortunately, the squad failed in the final stages and did not win any silverware.
Known for his very aggressive counter-pressing style, Pochettino has been praised for his gameplay. However, his best asset is his ability to nurture youth talent. With an academy like Chelsea in his hands, he can do wonders.
According to Sky Sports Chelsea is interested in former Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane. Famously known for his European three-peat, Zidane has been one of the most successful managers in the history of the Champions League. His ability to handle pressure situations has been applauded by many critics.
However, in his managerial career, Zidane has only managed Real Madrid and has rejected every other club including PSG till now. It is believed that he has a keen interest in becoming the successor of Didier Deschamps in France. Hence, roping in French International is looking very tough at this moment.
