5 TIMES CHELSEA OUTPLAYED OPPONENTS UNDER TUCHEL IN UCL
Chelsea appointed Thomas Tuchel back in January 2021 as their head coach after sacking Lampard from the job. Lampard, a Chelsea legend, had a good start to his coaching career but soon failed miserably and thus was sacked.
Tuchel since taking over as the Chelsea coach has been brilliant for most of it. Firstly within just 6 months, he took them to their 2nd UCL title in club history and also took them to the FA Cup final but eventually lost to Leicester.
In his full season in charge, Tuchel’s Chelsea was leading the premier league table till December end but due to injuries to key players in the second half, they slipped down. In the end, Chelsea finished 3rd in the premier league table. Tuchel also managed to take Chelsea to two cup finals The Carabao Cup and the FA Cup finals but lost both to Liverpool.
Since the start of the new season, it looked like Chelsea was off-color. Chelsea had a few tough games and lost 3 on the trot thus which led to Thomas Tuchel getting sacked. With Tuchel sacked we decided to look out for games where Tuchel’s Chelsea dominated the opponents and outplayed them on their day.
Thomas Tuchel had just arrived in January and faced a tough competition in the Champions League where he was bound to Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid over 2 legs in the Round of 16. Chelsea under Tuchel outplayed Simeone Atletico Madrid. In the First Leg being away leg Chelsea sat deep and played on the counter most of the time. Giroud scored an overhead kick to give Chelsea the lead and in the second leg at home, Chelsea again played the same tactics and again outplayed Atletico Madrid completely.
Chelsea on that day was way better with Tuchel’s back 3 being fluid and his pragmatic approach helped Chelsea to overcome Simone Atletico Madrid who themselves drilled well defensively yet Tuchel overcame them with ease.
After beating Atletico Madrid in the Round of 16 and then Porto in the quarter-finals. Chelsea had their toughest test of all time when they came up against Zidane Real Madrid in the semifinals. Real Madrid is a habitual UCL winner and it was regarded as the toughest test of Tuchel Chelsea so far.
Again the First leg was Away in Madrid Tuchel adopted the same approach against Los Blancos. Chelsea got rewards from this approach they eventually came out of Madrid with a tough draw and considering the second leg being at home this draw was regarded as a win for Chelsea.
In the second leg, Chelsea was at its supreme best. They completely outplayed Real Madrid on that day. Chelsea didn’t allow Madrid to have the ball and dictate the play like Madrid’s side likes to do in their games. But Chelsea completely shut down Madrid’s wingers and their attacking output was blocked which choked Madrid’s total and the result was a comprehensive Chelsea win over Real Madrid.
One of the best games in Chelsea history. Chelsea was in the Champions League against a tough Manchester City. Thomas Tuchel had his number on Pep
Guardiola. Tuchel already defeated Pep in 2 games in the prior meetings. It forced Pep to do something out of the box and went in without a DM which played into Tuchel’s hand very well. Pep also went in without proper no.9 and played KDB as false 9 which again disjointed the Manchester City game flow and broke their fluid gameplay.
Chelsea dominated Manchester City and eventually ended up winning their 2nd Champions League in the history of the club. Chelsea defeated Manchester City by a 1-0 scoreline.
Another splendid performance of Thomas Tuchel Chelsea came against Juventus in the group stage. In their first meeting on Matchday 2, Juventus got the better of Chelsea and defeated them. But in the return leg on Matchday 5 when Chelsea faced Juventus at their home ground.
Chelsea dominated the game be it in defensive midfield or in attack Chelsea was outstanding. They dominated the game on all ends of the pitch. They scored 4 goals past Juventus with ease.
Another big win under Tuchel came in UCL against Malmo. In the UCL group stage, they defeated Malmo by a big margin of 4 goals. Against Malmo Chelsea was just brilliant. They were all over on Malmo. Chelsea scored 4 goals with ease without breaking a sweat. Tuchel’s 3-4-2-1 system used in this game was too good for Malmo and Tuchel’s brilliance as manager was once again at its peak.
