Football News: Who is Marcus Edwards?

The North Londoners defeated Marseille to start their most recent foray into Europe’s top league, and now they head to Portugal for their second group match.

However, as they take against the Portuguese runners-up from last season, their task becomes noticeably more challenging. Given Edwards’ recent success in Portugal, one of the primary threats they will keep an eye out for is the young player.

In light of this, we will examine the former Spurs prospect carefully to determine how much of a threat he might present to his former employers at the José Alvalade Stadium.

Winger Edwards, age 23, was born in Enfield, London. At the age of eight, he started his football training in the Spurs academy. In 2016, he signed his first professional deal with the North London team.

Edwards has frequently played on the right side of midfield throughout his young career, but he also feels at home on the left or in the centre. He has so far displayed expert ball-handling skills, routinely using his speed and cunning to get past opponents.

Since Edwards has only been given one senior appearance for Spurs during his stay with the team, he frequently looks for opportunities elsewhere. In 2018, he signed a loan agreement with Norwich City, who were then in the Championship, but after just one appearance, for ‘personal reasons,’ he left for Tottenham.

Following another loan stint with Excelsior of the Netherlands, Edwards permanently left Spurs in order to join Vitoria de Guimaraes of Portugal. He attracted attention right away thanks to his nine goals across all competitions in his rookie season.

Edwards had a less consistent second season after that before regaining his prior form in January 2022. Since then, he has continued to show his promise and has had a solid start to the new season at Sporting.

Edwards has played for the Three Lions between the under-16 and under-20 age levels and is qualified to play for both the England and Cyprus national teams.

After comparing Edwards to Argentine legend Lionel Messi, former Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino has made no secret of his enthusiasm for Edwards.

He stated, “His qualities, it just looks, his body and the way he plays, remember a little bit from the beginning of Messi,” when he was living in North London.

Ruben Amorim, the young winger’s current manager, has supported him to play for the senior England side should his current trajectory continue.

Marcus is incredibly talented,” he said during his presser before the game. He is among the most significant players at executing plays outside of the lines. It took him some time to become used to Portuguese culture.

He is incredibly talented and has the potential to join the English national squad by improving significantly. He must pay closer attention to his training and everything that goes with it.

Football is all that happens before, during, and after games. He has my full trust. He still has a long way to go, but I believe we did very well by signing him.
