Chelsea News: Chelsea interested in Salzburg Sporting Director
Freund is currently serving as the Sporting Director of Austrian club Red Bull Salzburg.
American businessman Todd Boehly took over Chelsea From Roman Abramovic at the start of the season. Since then Chelsea is going through a huge structural change. After his arrival, former club director Marina Granovskaia exited the club. Boehly himself then took over the Sporting Director role.
Earlier in the month, Chelsea sacked their Champions League winning manager Thomas Tuchel due to a poor start to the season. Boehly then replaced Tuchel with former Brighton manager Graham Potter.
The report further says that Fruend’s current club RB Salzburg has been already updated about the situation.
After becoming the Sporting Director of Chelsea, Todd Boehly took many tough decisions. He spent over £260 million in the transfer window and made multiple signings like Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Raheem Sterling, Marc Cucureilla, Kalidou Koulibally, and Wesley Fofana to strengthen the squad.
He then sacked German manager Thomas Tuchel and signed Todd Boehly on a long-term contract.
However, there was still something left to finish the structural overhaul. Boehly was desperately looking for a new Sporting Director who shares the same vision as him and his new manager Graham Potter.
The idea was to sign the new director within this year itself so that they can give him/her ample time before the January transfer window.
Meanwhile, it was also reported that Boehly wants to develop Chelsea in the mold of City and Red bull Group.
Finally, they have found the right person for the job. Christoph Freund is famous for his ability to unearth talents. The Salzburg Director has previously spotted talents like Erling Haaland, Dayot Upamecano, Patson Daka, Benjamin Sesko, Sadio Mane and Naby Keita.
During his time in Austria, Salzburg became the best club in the country and Freund must be given credit for that.
Freund was present at Stamford Bridge last Wednesday as Salzburg played a 1-1 draw with Chelsea.
After the match when asked about his chances to become the next Chelsea Sporting Director, Freund said, “You should never rule anything out in football and Chelsea are such a huge club. But I’m sports director in Salzburg and I really enjoy it.”
Chelsea got a topsy turvy start to their English premier league campaign. The Blues won only three of their first six matches. They are now in seventh place in the table. Chelsea’s this weekend’s match against Liverpool was called off because of Queen Elizabeth’s funeral.
They now have a long gap for the International window. Chelsea will face Crystal Palace in their next match.
