Real Madrid Cruise to 3-1 Win Over FC Barcelona in El Clasico
Real Madrid reclaimed their position at the top of the La Liga points table after securing a win over arch-rivals FC Barcelona.
The defending champions hosted Barcelona at Santiago Bernabeu and cruised to a 3-1 win over the Catalan outfit.
It took just 12 minutes for Real Madrid to break the deadlock and take the lead against Barcelona. Karim Benzema put Real Madrid 1-0 up in the 12th minute of the match before Federico Valverde doubled their advantage in the 35th minute.
Barcelona pulled one back in the 83rd minute through Ferran Torres. As the visitors searched for an equalizer, Real Madrid struck again. Rodrygo stepped up to take the penalty Real Madrid won and converted it to put the game to bed in the 90+1st minute.
Valverde made it 2-0 just five minutes after the half-hour mark. Real Madrid sprung a counter-attack and Mendy found Valverde at the edge of the box.
The Uruguayan fired the ball past the Barcelona goalkeeper and into the net as Real Madrid established a two-goal cushion.
Barcelona halved their deficit in the 83rd minute through Torres. After some good work on the left, Ansu Fati sent a cross into the Real Madrid box, which Lewandowski flicked to Torres. The Spanish international slotted it home to make it 2-1.
Barca then searched for an equalizer that would salvage a point for them and keep them at the top of the points table. But they never found another, and instead, it was Real Madrid who scored.
Eric Garcia caught Rodrygo inside the Barcelona penalty box and after a VAR review, the referee pointed to the spot. Rodrygo took the penalty himself and converted to put the game to bed.
The result leaves Real Madrid at the top of the La Liga points table. Real Madrid have 25 points from their nine matches in the league. They are unbeaten in the league so far this season and have eight wins and one draw.
Meanwhile, this was Barcelona’s first La Liga defeat of the season. They now sit second with 22 points from nine matches. Barcelona have seven wins, one draw, and a defeat.
