Juventus Captain Leonardo Bonucci Close to Signing an Extension Deal

Leonardo Bonucci started his football journey in the academy of Viterbese. He then graduated from Viterbese academy and joined Serie-A giants Inter Milan.

Bonucci failed to cement his place in the Nerazzurri setup. The then played for Treviso, Pisa, Genoa, and bari before joining another Serie-A giant Juventus in 2010. Bonucci gradually made his way to the starting eleven. The defender then won six consecutive Serie-A titles with the Bianconeri.

He left the club in 2017 and joined AC Milan. However, just after one year, Bonucci again returned to Juventus and won two more Serie-A titles with the club. Bonucci was also a key part of the Italian team that won the Euro Cup last season.

Earlier there were reports suggesting Bonucci might leave the club as early as next winter transfer window. The 35-year-old defender is currently past his prime and has not played at his best throughout the ongoing season.

As a result, he was kept out of the starting lineup in Juventus’ last match against local rivals Torino. Bonucci though played in the second half as Juventus came out with all three points.

Following this match, there were rumours saying that the Juventus captain’s relationship with coach Massimiliano Allegri is at its lowest point. Thus he does not want to continue at the club.

But now it seems like, things have changed drastically and the defender will stay at Juventus. Meanwhile, the Bianconeri are currently struggling in both the league and European competition.

They have won only four out of their first ten matches in the Serie-A and got sixteen points currently. Once a contender for Serie-A, Allegri’s team is currently in eighth place in the table. Then in the Champions League Juventus lost 3 out of their first 4 matches. This includes a humiliating defeat against Israeli club Maccabi Haifa.

They are on the verge of getting knocked out from the group stage of the UEFA Champions League and at this moment and a top-four finish in Serie-A can be considered an achievement. So now more than ever, Juventus need their senior players like Bonucci to take them past the finishing line.

Thus this news of Bonucci’s contract renewal is a very refreshing one from the Bianconeri camp.
