Juventus Emerged as Favourites to Sign Alex Grimaldo
Alex Grimaldo started his football journey at the academy of Valencia. The left trained for two years at Valencia academy and then joined the youth setup of Barcelona.
Grimaldo rose through the ranks at La Masia and was promoted to the reserve team in 2011. He played four seasons for Barcelona’s second team but failed to break into the first team. Finally, the left-back joined Portuguese side Benfica in the winter window of 2016 for a fee of €1.5 million.
In Benfica, he finally established himself as a starter. The left-back has won three Primeira Liga titles, 1 Taca de Portugal and 1 Taca da Liga and 3 Supertaca Candido de Oliveira titles so far.
After dominating the Serie-A for over a decade, Juventus have failed to reach the top three in their last two terms. And even this time around, they have got a very poor start to their season. The Bianconeri have won only six out of their first twelve matches. With twenty-two points, they are currently in the seventh position in Serie-A.
Their performance in the UEFA Champions League have been ever poor. The Bianconeri have lost five out of their six groups league matches at UCL. This also includes a defeat against Maccabi Haifa. As a result, they have crashed out of the UCL and will participate in the Europa League now.
Now Juventus management understands their situation very well. They want to strengthen multiple positions in the next few windows. And the left-back position is one of them.
Juventus left-back Alex Sandro is currently in the last year of his contract. He has passed his prime and might leave the club at the end of the season. As a result, the Bianconeri are already looking at players who can replace him in thye next summer.
Benfica’s defender Alex Grimaldo is also in the final year of his contract. The 27-year old however is in his prime form and is most likely not going to extend his stay in Portugal. Hence he has risen to be a very good option for Juventus.
The report from Fabrizio Romano further suggests that EPL giants Arsenal had the chance to sign him the last summer. But they decided against it and signed Zinchenko in that position. Apart from Juventus Inter Milan are also interested in the fullback but the Bianconeri currently are leading the race.
Juventus will face Inter Milan in their next match.
