Barcelona Keen on Signing Martin Zubimendi

Born in San Sebastian, Martin Zubimendi joined the academy of real Sociedad at a very early age.

He soon graduated from the academy and was promoted to the third team of the club. Zubimendi impressed while playing for the C team and was promoted to the reserve side. He then signed his first professional contract in 2018 and was soon introduced to the senior side.

Within a few weeks, Zubimendi established himself as a starter on the Real Sociedad side. The midfielder played a huge role in Sociedad’s Copa del Rey victory in the 2019-20 season. He then featured for the Spanish team in the Olympics. Zubimendi also made his senior debut for Spain when the u-21 team was called to represent the senior team following a COVID-19 outbreak.

Xavi’s side sees him as the ideal replacement for club captain Sergio Busquets. After graduating from La Masia, Busquets became the backbone of the Barcelona team. He remained a starter for over a decade.

But now he is way past his prime. The midfielder’s contract will end next summer. Busquets who will be soon 35, does not want to continue at the club. Hence Barcelona are looking at multiple players who can replace the Spaniard ta the next season.

Replacing Busquets is going to be a very tough job. There are only a few in the world who plays the game as Busquets does. And Real Sociedad youngster Martin Zubimendi is one of those unique profiles.

The midfielder is known for his game-reading, energy, playmaking, and defensive abilities. And with the age in his side, he can be a great fit for the Barcelona midfield. However, signing him will be very difficult for the Catalan giants.

Zubimendi recently signed a contract renewal with Sociedad which will keep him at the club till 2027. He is currently seen as an untouchable and Barcelona have no other way than to pay his release clause worth €60 million to La Real. But before that, they will have to convince the midfielder who is currently very happy at Sociedad.

Meanwhile, Spanish giants Barcelona have got a great start to their La Liga season. The Blaugrana have won ten out of their first twelve matches. With thirty-one points from twelve games, they are currently in second place in the table.

Xavi’s side will face UD Almeria in their next outing.
