An old picture of Lionel Messi with Julian Alvarez is circulating on social media. Messi and Alvarez played a key role as Argentina qualified for the final of the FIFA World Cup 2022 by defeating Croatia 3-0 in the semi-final tie at the Lusail Stadium on Tuesday.
Alvarez won the penalty during the 34th minute of the game, which was expertly converted by Lionel Messi. The Manchester City attacker doubled the Albiceleste’s lead six minutes before the half-time whistle, while adding one more to his tally in the 69th minute of the game.
Now 10 years later, both players were on fire as Argentina defeated Croatia 3-0. Football fans across the globe have gone into a frenzy over the details of the photo.
Alvarez has played 20 games (in all competitions) for the Cityzens so far, registering seven goals and two assists. He won the Etihad Player of the Month for November 2022.
Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni admitted that it was difficult to not be carried away by his team’s victory against Croatia.
Speaking to the media, he said: “We celebrated because it is exciting to be in the final, but there is still one step to go. This is something to enjoy but it’s over now, so we need to move on to the next one.”
