Benfica Manager Roger Schmidt Makes Transfer Admission About Enzo Fernandez

Benfica manager Roger Schmidt has said he will respect the decision Enzo Fernandez takes with regard to his future amid transfer interest from elsewhere.

The 21-year-old featured in all seven games Argentina played at Qatar World Cup 2022, starting in five of those and coming on as a substitute in the other two. His performances in Qatar also won him the young player of the tournament award.

Benfica manager Roger Schmidt insisted he will respect whatever decision Enzo Fernandez takes with regard to his future amid transfer interest from Chelsea.

Roger Schmidt added: “These young players sometimes have opportunities. It’s not just Enzo, it’s all the players. It’s part of the football business. If they have opportunities, they have to make decisions. I can give them advice and recommendations. But I always respected the players’ decisions, because they only have one career.

Benfica signed Enzo Fernandez only in the previous summer transfer window. The Portuguese outfit landed the young midfielder from the Argentine side River Plate. But he appears likely to leave the club in the January transfer window.

Enzo Fernandez’s contract with Benfica reportedly has a release clause – which can be triggered to sign the Argentina national football team midfielder.

Real Madrid, Manchester United, and Liverpool are also among the clubs linked with a move for Enzo Fernandez. However, it is Chelsea who looks the likeliest to land the 21-year-old.

Since signing for Benfica, Enzo Fernandez has featured in 24 matches across all competitions for the Primeira Liga side. He has also bagged three goals and five assists in those matches for Benfica.

Meanwhile, Fernandez’s current contract with Benfica runs until 2027. That means he has more than four years left on his current contract with the Primeira Liga side.
