Bruno Fernandes Hits Back at Suggestions He Aimed Dig at Cristiano Ronaldo
Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes has hit back at suggestions he aimed a dig at Cristiano Ronaldo with his comments after the Red Devils’ win over Manchester City in a Premier League fixture on Saturday.
The Red Devils hosted their cross-town rivals at Old Trafford in a league fixture and got the better of the defending champions, inflicting a 2-1 defeat on Manchester City.
After a goalless first half, Manchester United saw Manchester City take the lead at the hour mark. Jack Grealish, on as a substitute, headed home after Kevin de Bruyne teed up him with a cross to send Manchester City ahead in the game.
However, Manchester United clawed their way back into the game and ultimately won the match with two goals – in the 78th and 82nd minutes. Bruno Fernandes restored parity for Man Utd in the 78th minute before Marcus Rashford scored the winner in the 82nd minute.
Speaking after the match, Bruno Fernandes heaped praise on his teammates, stating that they used to be individuals but are now a team that works for each other.
“[We] used to be individuals, now we are a team. You can see a proper team that works for each other,” Bruno Fernandes said after their win over Manchester City.
Bruno Fernandes’ comments were misinterpreted by some as a subtle dig at Cristiano Ronaldo, who parted ways with the Old Trafford outfit in November last year. Cristiano Ronaldo had received heavy criticism from many quarters during the first half of the 22/23 season with Manchester United before he departed the club.
Manchester United and Cristiano Ronaldo terminated the Portuguese’s contract with the club by mutual consent in November following his explosive interview with Piers Morgan.
Bruno Fernandes took to Instagram to clarify his comments were misinterpreted and that he did not aim a dig at Cristiano Ronaldo.
“Don’t use my name to attack Cristiano. Cristiano was part of our team for half the season and as I said in many interviews, everyone since Liverpool is amazing and acting like a proper team and you can see the results. We carry on!”
Meanwhile, Manchester United moved up to third and within a point of second-placed Manchester City in the Premier League points table with the win. The Red Devils have 38 points from 18 matches in the English top flight so far in the 22/23 season.
