Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag was unhappy with the ‘inconsistent’ use of VAR in Premier League after the Red Devils and Southampton shared points in their most recent fixture.

Manchester United took on Southampton in a Premier League fixture at Old Trafford and the two sides played out a goalless draw. The Red Devils were reduced to 10 men after Casemiro received a red card in the 34th minute of the match.

Casemiro was sent off for a tackle on Southampton midfielder Carlos Alcaraz. Anthony Taylor initially gave Casemiro a yellow card, but after reviewing the incident on the pitchside monitor, the referee issued a straight red card to the Brazilian midfielder.

Erik ten Hag questioned why VAR did not show interest in a similar tackle made during the Chelsea vs Leicester City match. Leicester City defender Ricardo Pereira had escaped punishment for a similar tackle on Joao Felix during the game which the Blues won 3-1.

Erik ten Hag also fumed at VAR not showing interest in two potential penalty incidents during Manchester United vs Southampton, one of which he claimed was a clear and obvious handball.

The inconsistency (means) players don’t know anymore what is the policy,” Erik ten Hag said. “I think it’s all across. I mean, you see yesterday, Leicester-Chelsea, then VAR is not coming on the line.

Today it’s coming on the line and then it’s two penalty situations, but they don’t come on the line. I think especially the first one was for me clear and obvious handball, so what is the policy?

Man Utd dropped two points against Southampton, and it now leaves them 16 points behind table-toppers Arsenal. Erik ten Hag and co. have 50 points from 26 matches in the Premier League so far this season.

Arsenal, who sit at the top of the Premier League table, have 66 points from 27 matches. Manchester United have a game in hand over Arsenal, but even if they win it, they could only reduce the gap on the Gunners to 13 points.

Manchester United, meanwhile, are also 11 points behind defending champions and second-placed Manchester City, who have 61 points from 27 matches. Man City have also played a game more than Man Utd have in Premier League so far this season.
