FC Barcelona midfielder Sergi Roberto has admitted he wants Lionel Messi to return to the Catalan outfit.
Lionel Messi left Barcelona in 2021 after his contract with Barcelona had expired. The Argentine wanted to extend his stay in Barcelona, but the Catalan outfit could not retain his services due to financial and structural obstacles.
Lionel Messi signed for Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2021 and has been plying his trade for the French side ever since. But Messi is due to be out of contract at the end of the current campaign. He has not yet agreed to a contract extension at PSG. That has led to speculation surrounding his future beyond the 22/23 season.
A move back to Barcelona has been among those speculated on. Major League Soccer side Inter Miami have also been mooted as a potential destination, while Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal are also reportedly interested in his services.
Speaking after Barcelona defeated Real Madrid 2-1 to go 12 points clear at the top of La Liga table, Sergi Roberto revealed he would like to see Lionel Messi back at the Catalan outfit.
Lionel Messi was booed during Paris Saint-Germain’s 2-0 defeat at the hands of Rennes in Ligue 1 in their most recent fixture. Sergi Roberto does not understand why such treatment is meted out to Messi, who he is having a good season.
“You don’t understand why, he is having good seasons in Paris, scoring many goals, assisting…” Sergi Roberto said.
“Because of the elimination they have taken it with him, but he is a spectacular player and he knows very badly that a player of this level is treated in this way. Here we are going to treat him very well if he comes.”
