Enzo Fernandez Explains Decision to Join Chelsea
Enzo Fernandez has explained why he chose to join Premier League side Chelsea in the January transfer window of 2023.
Chelsea broke the British transfer record to sign Enzo Fernandez from Benfica in January, with the Stamford Bridge outfit landing the Argentine midfielder for a transfer fee of £106.8m.
“One of the factors was that I liked the long-term project the club is creating. I also always dreamed about playing in the Premier League, and Chelsea had shown their interest in me even before the World Cup,” Enzo Fernandez said.
“I came to a big club, one that has always fought for trophies and that has won two Champions Leagues in a very short period of time.
“Now that I’m here, I’ve realised how big this club really is. And that’s what we wanted, what the club aimed for as a whole. This was an important factor when making this decision, apart from the fact that it’s in such a beautiful city like London. I thought it all through with my family. If it’s God’s will, everything will turn out fine, and I’ll strive to win anything and everything.”
Since moving to Chelsea, Enzo Fernandez has been slotted straight into the starting XI. He has made 12 appearances for the Blues so far this season, starting in each of those.
However, Chelsea have had an underwhelming campaign so far in the 22/23 season. Despite their heavy spending in the transfer markets, Chelsea languishes at 11th in the Premier League points table.
Chelsea have also already sacked two managers this season. They sacked Thomas Tuchel Thomas earlier this season and replaced him with Graham Potter, who they sacked earlier this month. Chelsea have since appointed Frank Lampard as an interim manager for the remainder of the season.
Chelsea, meanwhile, remains in contention for the Champions League title. They will take on Real Madrid in the quarter-finals of the competition.
