Atletico Madrid News: Diego Simeone Hopes Alvaro Morata Stays At The Club
Atletico Madrid news: Manager Diego Simeone said he hopes Alvaro Morata will stay at the club amidst rumours of Manchester United interest.
Morata is currently at Atletico Madrid, having spent the previous two seasons at Juventus on loan from the Spanish club. He has started the new season in style, playing a key role in Atletico’s win over Getafe in their La Liga 22/23 season opener.
Morata scored two goals in the game as Atletico Madrid kicked off their new campaign with a 3-0 victory. Antoine Griezmann was the other goalscorer.
Speaking after their win over Getafe, Simeone said everyone at Atletico Madrid hopes Morata stays at the club. He also praised the Spanish international, stating he is working very well.
“I think that all footballers need to have the confidence to do important things. He came back with great humility and wanted to work. He came back trying hard.”
Morata initially joined Atletico Madrid on a loan deal from Premier League club Chelsea in January 2019. Atletico Madrid later that year, in July, confirmed the permanent signing of Morata at the end of his loan spell.
Morata has so far featured in 62 games for Atletico Madrid. In his first season at the club, the Spaniard scored six goals from 17 appearances for the club. He made 44 appearances the next season, scoring 16 goals.
Atletico Madrid then loaned Morata to his former side Juventus in September 2020. Morata spent the next two seasons on the Italian side. Morata made 44 appearances for Old Lady in the 2020/21 season and scored a respectable 20 goals for the club.
In his second season on loan at Juventus, the 29-year-old appeared in 48 matches and scored 12 goals. Juventud did have the option to buy Morata, but they were not ready to trigger the €35m clause to sign him on a permanent deal.
Morata has two years left on his current contract with Atletico Madrid.
