Carlo Ancelotti Insists Real Madrid Tie With Liverpool Not Over Yet
Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has insisted that the Champions League round of 16 tie with Liverpool is not over yet despite Los Blancos inflicting a humiliating defeat on the Merseyside outfit at Anfield in the first leg.
Vinicius Jr scored in the 21st and 36th minutes to restore parity for Real Madrid before Eder Militao sent them ahead in the 47th minute.
Karim Benzema then added his name to the scoresheet in the 55th minute before he bagged his brace in 67 minutes to establish a three-goal cushion for Real Madrid.
Real Madrid are now the outright favourites to progress to the quarter-final of the Champions League from this tie. However, speaking after Real Madrid romped to a 5-2 win over Liverpool, Carlo Ancelotti insisted the tie is not over yet.
“Liverpool are a great team because they play at a high tempo and that’s tough to come by in Europe. It’s going to be tough for us.”
Carlo Ancelotti also admitted that Real Madrid struggled at the start of the game which saw Liverpool take a two-goal lead.
“We struggled a lot at the start, but in the second half, we made a difference. We didn’t expect to get off to such a start, but as is often the case with this team, we stayed calm and gradually got into the game thanks to the quality we have,” the Italian tactician said.
The two sides remained locked in a draw at the end of first-half, but Real Madrid waltzed their way into a convincing win over Liverpool in the second half.
When asked what changed in the second half, Carlo Ancelotti said: “The forwards were highly effective and we created problems when we broke out of their pressure. We sorted out the defensive side of things and in the second half, we made a difference. We looked for our front players, who were outstanding today.”
