Carlo Ancelotti: Real Madrid Played ‘Very Well-Rounded’ Game in 2-0 Win Over Chelsea

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti said they played a very well-rounded game in their defeat of Chelsea in the Champions League quarter-final first leg.

Real Madrid hosted Chelsea at Santiago Bernabeu in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final and cruised to a 2-0 win over the Premier League side. Goals from Karim Benzema and Marco Asensio on either side of halftime secured Real Madrid the win.

Chelsea were reduced to 10 men when the referee brandished a red card to Ben Chilwell for a foul on Rodrygo in the 59th minute of the game.

Carlo Ancelotti explained why Real Madrid did not press more against a Chelsea side who were a man down. He said they lacked the energy and clarity to do so as they had fought a lot when it was 11 men vs 11 men.

Carlo Ancelotti also warned that the tie is far from over. He said: “You might think we could have pressed more against 10, but when it was eleven against eleven we fought a lot and in the end, I think we lacked energy and clarity. We have to come away satisfied but there are another 90 minutes to go.

We have to repeat today’s game at Stamford Bridge because we know Chelsea will give it their best shot next week.

Carlo Ancelotti added: “The team looked very good and I’m very happy. I’m very pleased, but we have to be calm and collected because there are 90 minutes left to play and anything can happen in football. We have to manage our lead there and try to repeat the game we played today.

The second leg between Real Madrid and Chelsea will kick off at 12:30 am Indian Standard Time on April 19.
