Chelsea News: The Blues are off to a winning start against a defiant Everton who lost two players due to injuries
Chelsea News: Blues defeated a tough Everton to start their 2017 Premier League campaign with a win.
The frightening injury to Everton defender Ben Godfrey, which forced him to leave the pitch on a stretcher after just 10 minutes, ruined the first half and left Lampard with few options.
Timo Werner and Marcos Alonso were left out by Tuchel as they are linked with transfer moves away from the club. We will discuss the game’s three most crucial points.
Frank Lampard and Thomas Tuchel both recently added two players to their starting lineups. They were James Tarkowski and Dwight McNeil, who both transferred from Burnley to Everton in the summer.
In order to shore up the Toffees’ weak defense, Tarkowski was signed for free. McNeil will help offset Richarlison’s £60 million departure.
Chelsea had two players at each end of the field who had competed at the highest level of European football: Kalidou Koulibaly and Raheem Sterling. Marc Cucurella, a fellow was selected for the bench after an intriguing move from Brighton. The transfer cost about £62 million.
Everton’s Ben Godfrey would have entered the new season full of optimism. However, this injury might end his season and chances of making it to the World Cup. After just 10 minutes of play, though, it appears like the 24-year-season old’s has suffered a serious setback.
A mix-up with Jordan Pickford, the goalkeeper, in the back required Godfrey to scramble back and attempt a last-ditch challenge.
After the mishap, the former Norwich star asked for help immediately. The referee asked for a stretcher and oxygen which signals a serious ankle injury.
Godfrey was stretchered off in lieu of Mason Holgate after seven minutes of what appeared to be severe agony on the turf, amid shouts from spectators around the stadium.
Everton’s hopes were dashed by Abdoulaye Doucoure’s clumsy foul on Ben Chilwell after such a spectacular first half from both a team and individual standpoint.
Craig Pawson pointed to the penalty spot after the Chelsea winger was taken down by the Toffees midfielder after receiving a skillful through ball from Kouliably and wriggling into the box.
Only until Edouard Mendy denied Tarkowski for the Blues in the penultimate minute of extra time did either club come close to scoring before the break. Jorginho then broke the scoreless draw. The Italian cooly tucked home in the bottom left corner as Pickford was turned away.
