Chelsea Set to Revive Transfer Interest in Enzo Fernandez

Chelsea are set to revive their interest in Benfica and Argentina national football team midfielder Enzo Fernandez and are planning a fresh move for the 22-year-old before the January transfer window closes, according to a report in The Guardian.

Enzo Fernandez has a £106m release clause in his Benfica contract, but the Blues’ reluctance to trigger it saw the deal collapse. Benfica remains reluctant to part ways with Fernandez for a transfer fee less than his release clause.

The Guardian report that Chelsea are due to resume talks with Benfica over a move for Enzo Fernandez this week. However, Benfica does not want to sell Fernandez until the end of the ongoing 22/23 season.

Meanwhile, Chelsea saw a bid of £55m for midfielder Moises Caicedo rejected by his club Brighton & Hove Albion last week. The Ecuador international also remains an option for Chelsea, who have been very active in the January transfer window.

The Stamford Bridge outfit could make an improved offer for Moises Caicedo as they look to reinforce their midfield department.

Enzo Fernandez’s Argentina teammate and Moises Caicedo’s Brighton teammate Alexis Mac Allister is also an option for Chelsea.

Chelsea have also been linked with a move for West Ham and England national football team midfielder Declan Rice in the summer transfer window. But Premier League table-toppers Arsenal have emerged as the favourites to land the highly-rated midfielder in the summer transfer window of 2023.

Meanwhile, Chelsea currently languishes at 10th in the Premier League points table. The west Londoners have 29 points from 20 matches in the Premier League so far this season and are 21 points behind league leaders Arsenal.

In the race for the top four, Chelsea are also 10 points behind fourth-placed Manchester United, who have 39 points from 20 matches.

Chelsea will be aiming to turn their season around and improve their fortunes in the remainder of the 22/23 campaign.
