Cristiano Ronaldo Becomes 1st Man to Score at Five Different FIFA World Cups
In the process, he became the first man to score a goal at five different editions of FIFA’s flagship event. This is Ronaldo’s fifth FIFA World Cup and the Portuguese superstar, Cristiano Ronaldo, has bagged at least a goal in each of them.
Ronaldo’s first goal at the World Cup came in 2006 when he scored for Portugal in their 2-0 win over Iran in the group stage. The now 37-year-old also scored a goal each in the 2010 and 2014 FIFA World Cups.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s best-ever World Cup campaign in terms of goals scored came in Russia in 2018. The Portuguese superstar, Cristiano Ronaldo, scored four goals – including a hat-trick against Spain – in the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
With his goal against Ghana in Portugal’s FIFA World Cup 2022 opener, Cristiano Ronaldo has now scored eight goals at FIFA’s flagship event.
Meanwhile, the match of Portugal vs Ghana had a thrilling end after Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring. Andre Ayew restored parity for Ghana in the 73rd minute, slotting home from close range after Portugal had failed to clear an attack from the opponents.
Portugal, however, retook the lead in the 78th minute of the match, with Bruno Fernandes setting up Joao Felix, who made a brilliant finish to send his side 2-1 up.
Portugal then established a two-goal cushion just two minutes later, this time Rafael Leao finding the net. Leao, who came off the bench just minutes earlier, curled the ball into the far corner after receiving a pass from Fernandes.
The game, though, had a nervy end after Osman Bukari halved Ghana’s deficit in the 89th minute of the match. Ghana searched for an equalizer in the injury time but Portugal held on to earn all three points.
The win, meanwhile, takes Portugal to the top of the Group H points table. Cristiano Ronaldo and co. have three points from one game, while Ghana languishes in fourth with no points. South Korea and Uruguay, who played out a goalless draw earlier today, occupy the second and third positions respectively with one point each.
