Is Cristiano Ronaldo To Be benched Again?
Is Cristiano Ronaldo to be benched again in the quarterfinals? Cristiano Ronaldo became the first person in the history of football to score a goal in all five editions of the World Cup he took part. But after the first match, Ronaldo seems to be struggling to score a goal for his team.
Ronaldo was substituted in the match against South Korea in the 65th minute by Fernando Santos. Walking off the field, Ronaldo and Choe Gue-sung got into a verbal spat because the South Korean told Ronaldo to leave the field immediately. Ronaldo clarified the same to the reporters also. It should be noted South Korea did win the match against Portugal.
Ronaldo also faced substitution in the ‘Round of 16’ clash against Switzerland. While some tell Santos made one of the world’s elite top scorers a substitute due to Ronaldo’s petulant reaction towards Santos in the previous match.
Cristiano Ronaldo was substituted by Ramos in the match. To the surprise of everyone, Ramos scored a hat-trick in that match and Portugal won against Switzerland by 6-1. Ronaldo left the field alone leaving his teammates to cherish the valuable moment.
Cristiano Ronaldo started his World Cup campaign with a goal against Ghana but he neither scored any goal nor assisted any in the consecutive matches. So it might be one of the reasons why Ronaldo was substituted in his match against South Korea.
Ronaldo also reacted to this by keeping a finger on his mouth which gestured to silence but Portugal coach Santos did not take it lightly. Ronaldo then clarified this by telling his remarks were directed at a South Korean player and not the coach.
“I didn’t like it at all. I didn’t like it at all,” Santos told the media when he was asked how he had reacted to those images.” Then these matters are resolved, resolved in-house,” he said.
Again, Ronaldo was benched in the match against the Swiss. Though it keeps one of the world’s top scorers on the bench to start, the measure could be as unifying, perhaps, as it is punitive — proof that Santos will not tolerate, or reward, actions that he perceives as potentially jeopardizing the team.
When asked if Ronaldo would start against a determined Morocco in the competition’s quarterfinal, Santos gave the impression that the player might sit out the contest.
“Ronaldo will definitely (be involved), all the players on the bench can be used, if they are not in the starting line-up they can play later. It is important to look at the example of this player’s history, he is one of the best players in the world at playing professionally, being captain – all we have to do is think about this team collectively,” Santos concluded.
Meanwhile, Ronaldo’s partner Rodriguez posted on Instagram supporting him and added “I hope God and your dear friend Fernando hold hands and make us vibrate one more night,”.
So, we have to wait and watch whether The Goat will get a chance to prove himself in the semifinal.
