Joao Cancelo Dismisses Fall Out With Pep Guardiola Claims

Joao Cancelo has dismissed talks of a fallout with Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola prior to his move to Bayern Munich on loan from the English side in the January transfer window.

Bayern Munich signed Joao Cancelo on loan from Manchester City for the remainder of the season in one of the most surprising transfers of the 2023 January transfer window.

There were speculations that Joao Cancelo, who saw his game time at Manchester City reduce after the winter break, had a fallout with Pep Guardiola. The Portuguese international was also an unused substitute in Manchester City’s last three games before his move to Bayern Munich.

However, speaking after Bayern Munich defeated Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League round of 16 tie, Joao Cancelo addressed such speculations.

Joao Cancelo said claims that he fought with Pep Guardiola are lies. He also revealed he did not feel important in Man City’s last few games before his move to Bayern Munich, and that he, Guardiola, and the club together decided that he had to leave.

Joao Cancelo also left the door open to return to Manchester City. He said: “I like the new opportunities, it’s not against City. I think that at City he has taken the step to the level he wanted to reach, that’s where I became the player I am today.

I am grateful to both Pep and the club because they gave me everything. My daughter was born in Manchester and it’s a club I’ll never forget. And who knows, in football, you never know and at the end of the year I can return.

Meanwhile, Bayern Munich also have the option to make Joao Cancelo’s transfer to the club permanent by triggering a reported €70m buy clause.

Since making the move to Bayern Munich, Joao Cancelo has already featured in four games for the Bundesliga champions.
