Lionel Messi became the third player to reach 100 goals milestone in men’s international football when he starred for Argentine in their rout of Curacao.
Lionel Messi headed into the game with 99 goals for Argentina to his name. Against Curacao, Messi produced a sensational performance, bagging a hat-trick inside the first 37 minutes.
The Argentine superstar opened the scoring in the 20th minute of the match to send his side a goal up. After Nicolas Gonzalez made it 2-0 for Argentina in the 23rd minute, Messi scored in the 33rd minute to help establish a three-goal cushion for the defending World Cup winners.
Enzo Fernandez scored Argentina’s fourth goal in the 35th minute before Lionel Messi completed his hat-trick in the 37th minute. Angel di Maria and Gonzalo Montiel would score in the 78th and 87th minutes respectively as Argentine trounced Curacao.
Lionel Messi’s first goal of the game against Curacao saw him reach 100 goals for Argentina. The two goals that he would score later in the game took his international goal tally to 102.
Only Cristiano Ronaldo and Ali Daei have scored more goals in men’s international football than Lionel Messi. Daei scored 109 goals for Iran during his international career, while Cristiano Ronaldo, who is an active footballer, has 122 goals for Portugal to his name.
Seven more goals for the Argentine would see Lionel Messi equal Ali Daei’s tally, and a further goal would see him eclipse the Iranian legend to move to second in the list of top goalscorers in men’s international football.
Lionel Messi has also become the first male South American footballer to hit 100 goals in international football. Messi will be hoping to add more goals to his tally and further improve his international goalscoring stats.
Lionel Messi is 20 goals behind Cristiano Ronaldo in the top goalscorers in the men’s international football list. With both Messi and Ronaldo still plying their trade for their respective national football teams, both players could still add to their tallies.
Messi now will now turn his attention to PSG, who resume their campaign after the March international break with a Ligue 1 fixture against Lyon. Messi will be hoping and aiming to aid PSG to Ligue 1 title win this season.
