Liverpool News: Jurgen Klopp’s Verdict on the Darwin Nunez’s Headbutt and Red Card

The Reds’ thrilling 1-1 tie with Crystal Palace resulted in Nunez seeing red in more ways than one, leaving them winless after two Premier League games.

The 23-year-old striker, who joined the Liverpool team this summer for what might be a club record cost of £85 million, is suspended for three games.

On an exciting Merseyside night, Nunez headbutted Palace center-back Joachim Anderson in a fit of rage before Luis Diaz’s incredible equalizer saved a point.

The scorching shot from Uruguay forced referee Paul Tierney to send him out early and became the first Liverpool player to receive a red card for aggressive behaviour since Klopp took over nearly seven years ago.

The Reds manager blasted the event after the game and told Sky Sports: “Darwin knows [he let his teammates down]. I’ll speak with him. We did not want to witness that response.

He is aware that center-halves will confront him in this manner, but we do not want that response. But we’ll make good use of the time. Instead of using the suspension as a punishment, we’ll utilise it to focus on his physical strength.

James Milner, a midfielder for Liverpool, complimented his teammates for their response to the crisis and added: “He is going to be unhappy with that. He must be avoided while we band together. He’ll gain knowledge from it. The ground moved behind us as the team responded admirably.

We had a chance to steal it, but it didn’t work out. Good teams bounce back from setbacks by remaining a unit. You can see how ready everyone is for the fight and the season. The week has been difficult, and the preparations have not been well. Nobody can contest our attitude of resistance.

The Reds are already four points behind Premier League winners Manchester City, so Nunez’s ban might not be the most detrimental event of the evening. The good news is that Roberto Firmino should return in time for the trip to Manchester United the following Monday, according to Klopp.

The German acknowledged, “Not the start we wanted but two points are the least of our issues right now.

“With injuries, it might be quite difficult. We must utilize the following week to possibly bring one or two back, though I’m not sure whether that is feasible. It does not help that we have also lost Darwin, but we shall see if Bobby returns.”
