Marc Andre ter Stegen Reveals He Told Frenkie de Jong to Stay at Barcelona

FC Barcelona goalkeeper Marc Andre ter Stegen has revealed he told his teammate Frenkie de Jong to stay at the Catalan outfit in the summer transfer window amid transfer interest from Manchester United.

Frenkie de Jong had attracted transfer interest from Manchester United in the summer transfer window as the Red Devils looked to bolster their attacking department.

Speaking to The Times, Marc Andre ter Stegen has now revealed he spoke with the Netherlands international and tried his best to convince him to stay at Barcelona.

Marc Andre ter Stegen was full of praise for Frenkie de Jong, who he said is a player that Gavi and Pedri can look up to.

I was hoping he would stay because this is the type of player I want to have in my team. I want to make it very clear, when I talked to him I tried to [make him stay]. One day I will just put him in something here [he pretends to tie a rope around a chair leg] to keep him here always. I hope he will be here for a long time.

Meanwhile, Frenkie de Jong has featured in 26 games across all competitions for Barcelona so far in the 22/23 season. 19 of those appearances have come in La Liga, where Barcelona have played 21 matches this season. He started in 15 of those.

Frenkie de Jong has a contract that runs until 2026 with Barcelona. That means he has more than three years left on his current deal with the Spanish behemoths.

Meanwhile, Barcelona, who won the Spanish Super Cup title in January this year, sits atop the points table in La Liga, ahead of defending champions Real Madrid.
