Portugal Have Announced the 26-Man Squad for the 2022 World Cup
The European powerhouse are yet to lift a FIFA World Cup trophy. They will look to end their drought in Qatar later this year. The Seleção will kick off their campaign in Group H alongside Ghana, Uruguay, and South Korea.
Goalkeepers: Diogo Costa (FC Porto), Jose SA (Wolverhampton Wanderers), and Rui Patricio (AS Roma).
Rui Patricio has played 104 games for Portugal since making his debut in 2010. He is likely to keep the Gloves for the European nation in Qatar.
Defenders: Joao Cancelo (Manchester City), Diogo Dalot (Manchester United), Pepe (Porto), Ruben Dias (Manchester City), Danilo Pereira (PSG), Antonio Silva (Benfica), Nuno Mendes (PSG) and R. Guerrerio (Dortmund).
Joao Cancelo and Ruben Dias have played a key role in Manchester City’s recent success. They will have the massive task of marshalling Selecao’s backline in Qatar.
Midfielders: Bruno Fernandes (Manchester United), Bernardo Silva (Manchester City), Ruben Neves (Wolves), William (Real Betis), Palhinha (Fulham), Vitinha (PSG), Otavio (Porto), Matheus Nunes (Wolves) and Joao Mario (Benfica).
Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, and Ruben Neves are among the most talented midfielders in football. Fernando Santos will hope they are in top form in order to increase his team’s chances of ending his team’s FIFA World Cup drought.
Forwards: Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester United) Joao Felix (Atletico Madrid), Rafael Leao (AC Milan), Ricardo Horta (Braga), Andre Silva (RB Leipzig) and Goncalo Ramos (Benfica).
Despite his struggles for Manchester United this season, Cristiano Ronaldo is a proven match-winner and will play a key role for Portugal. Meanwhile, Liverpool’s Diogo Jota has missed out on the squad due to an injury.
Bruno Fernandes- The Manchester United midfielder has scored nine goals in 48 appearances for Portugal so far. He has been fine form this season, registering two goals and one assist in 12 Premier League appearances.
Bernardo Silva- The Manchester City midfielder will be Portugal’s chief creator during the FIFA World Cup. Silva has 13 Premier League games this season, scoring two goals and assisting five more.
Cristiano Ronaldo- The 37-year-old attacker is Portugal’s record goalscorer, with 117 goals in 191 appearances. He also won the Portuguese Player of the Year accolade 10 times.
