Revealed: Why Real Madrid Did Not Sign Joao Cancelo

Joao Cancelo: Real Madrid were not very active in the January transfer window. Carlo Ancelotti had already indicated that Los Blancos would not make additions in the January transfer window. However, they have the opportunity to sign Joao Cancelo from Manchester City.

The Portuguese departure from Etihad was one of the most surprising transfers. Bayern Munich eventually signed the defender. They have initially signed him on a loan, with a mandatory clause of signing him permanently. The Bavarians have spent $70 million on him.

Currently, Real Madrid are facing crises in the right-back position. Dani Carjval has been inconsistent and injured this season. Lucas Vasquez and Eder Militao have been used as his deputy but it is not their natural position. While Alvaro Odriozola is not preferred by Ancelloti.

According to Romano, Los Blancos are happy with their squad. They also consider Vinicius Tobias as the player for the future. He is currently on loan at Shakhtar Donetsk from Real Madrid Castilla. The Spaniard is only 18 years old but he is yet to make his debut for the Ukrainian side.

On the other hand, Cancelo is 28 years old. He is reaching his peak form now. He is likely to play at the top level for a good five years from now. Thus it would have been difficult for Tobias to get playing time. Not only this it looks like Florentino Perez wants to keep his squad young.

I stand by the fact that Vinicius Tobias cannot be worse than Carvajal or Lucas — who have been worst & 2nd worst performers of the season.

Vinicius Tobias is young & technical, regardless how raw he is — adding that dynamism is enough to change some of the patterns.

There are many top players who are under the age of 25. Vinicus Junior, Fede Valverde, Aurélien Tchouaméni etc. These players can be the players around whom a core team can be created. However, it is important that these players are young and hungry.

But their decision to not sign the former Juventus fullback could haunt them. It is not every day that such world-class players are available. Cancelo is a finished product, while Tobias might or might not reach big heights. Also, Real Madrid are already struggling in the right-back department.

During the January transfer window, there were no hints that the Portuguese will leave the club. Even in the previous summer transfer window, there was no indication of his departure. But things changed after the World Cup.

Nathan Ake was preferred over Cancelo at the left-back position. This situation did not please the former Inter Milan fullback. He asked Pep Guardiola about the same.

The pair clashed over the issue and Cancelo made the decision to leave Etihad. While Guardiola was full of praise for his former player. He even said that Joao is an exceptional player that’s why Bayern Munich wanted him.

Joao has already started life in good fashion in Germany. He provided an assist for Bayern’s opener against Mainz in the DFB Pokal. He is expected to play regularly for the Bundesliga side.
