Robert Lewandowski Set to Miss Real Madrid vs Barcelona Copa del Rey Clash
Robert Lewandowski could be unavailable for selection for FC Barcelona for their Copa del Rey semi-final first-leg clash with El Clasico rivals Real Madrid after the Polish attacker suffered an injury during their most recent fixture.
Barcelona took on Almeria in La Liga on Sunday and slumped to a shock 1-0 defeat. But, in a double blow, Robert Lewandowski also sustained an injury although he did feature for the entirety of the game for the Catalan outfit.
In a statement released on their official website, Barcelona said Robert Lewandowski has ‘strained the biceps femoris in his left hamstring’. Lewandowski will be out of action until he recovers from the injury.
Robert Lewandowski joins Pedri and Ousmane Dembele in Barcelona’s injury list. Barcelona will be without both Pedri and Ousmane Dembele when they take on Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey semi-final first leg, and the addition of Robert Lewandowski to that list would be a heavy blow to the Catalan outfit.
The last week was far from ideal for Barcelona as they suffered two consecutive defeats. They slumped to a 2-1 defeat to Manchester United in the Europa League knockout playoff second leg. That defeat has dumped Barcelona out of the Europa League.
The defeat at the hands of Almeria stopped Barcelona from going 10 points clear of second-placed Real Madrid in the race for the La Liga title. However, Barcelona still have a seven-point lead at the top of the La Liga points table.
The first leg of the Copa del Rey semi-final between Real Madrid and Barcelona kicks off at 1:30 am Indian Standard Time on March 3. Barcelona will be eyeing to once again get the better of their El Clasico rivals as they did in the Spanish Super Cup final earlier this season.
Real Madrid, meanwhile, will be eying to take revenge on Barcelona for defeating them in the final of the Spanish Super Cup final.
