Tottenham Hotspur Wants to Bring Back Their Former Youth Academy Product in January Window

The 20-year-old prefers to play as a left-back, but can also play as a centre-back in time.

After leaving Tottenham Hotspur in 2021, the England U-20 player has established himself as a key player for Sunderland. He missed some games because of an injury. But he is now fully fit to feature in Championship games.

Reports suggest that the Spurs can resign him in January. This move can be a surprising one, but there may be another reason behind it. The former Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho previously described him as a player with “a lot of quality”.
But Conte sold him when the defender was just 19 years of age. They may want to sign Dublin-born Cirkin to sell him again at a better price to any rival club of Sunderland.

The defender appeared on the Spurs’ first-team bench five times from 2019 to 2021. Since his move, the English defender has made 49 appearances for the Black Cats with no goals but two assists.

Cirkin has featured the first eight Championship games this season. The left-back is well suited for Conte’s system as he plays in a back three formation for Sunderland.
After returning to fitness, the Englishman featured on the bench in a 2-1 defeat against Swansea on Saturday.

He is expected to make his first team return in the home match against Wigan at the Stadium of Light in the upcoming Championship fixture. Reports suggest that the Spurs are considering triggering the £6 million buy-back clause in Dennis Cirkin’s contract.

When Cirkin made a move to EFL League one side, he talked about his move as a ‘perfect’. He spoke: “I’m delighted to be here, as soon as I got interest from Sunderland, it was a no-brainer – the fans, the stadium, the history – and I just thought the club was perfect for me.”

He was very optimistic that he could develop his career at the new club.
Antonio Conte bought experienced Ivan Perisic on a free transfer this summer.

But Conte is looking at a long-term replacement as the Croatian is 33 years old.
Only time can tell if Tottenham Hotspur wants to sign Cirkin to sell him on or, to use him as a much-needed left-sided central defender.
