VAR Controversy Overshadows Liverpool vs Wolves Fa Cup Draw
Liverpool and Wolverhampton played a 2-2 draw at Anfield in the FA Cup third-round tie on Sunday. The teams will now meet again for a rematch at the Molineux Stadium later this month.
Wolves manager Julen Lopetegui was left furious after his side were denied a winning goal against Liverpool in the FA Cup. Defender Toti Gomes put the ball into the back of the net during the final moments of the game.
However, his goal was disallowed for offside by the assistant referee. His decision was upheld by VAR despite no camera angle available to confirm the decision.
Liverpool’s new signing Cody Gakpo made his debut during the Reds FA Cup clash against Wolverhampton Wanderers. After the match, he revealed that he is relatively happy with his performance.
Speaking to LFCTV, he said: “Really great atmosphere for my [first] home game. I think I showed some good moments and some sloppy moments. So I can still improve on that point, keep working hard and try to help the team as much as I can.”
Gakpo played 159 games (in all competitions) for PSV, registering 55 goals and 50 assists. He won the Dutch Footballer of the Year 2021-22.
Liverpool are currently sixth in the Premier League, with 28 points from 17 games. They will next lock horns against Brighton and Hove Albion at the Falmer Stadium on January 14. The replay of the FA Cup third-round tie between Wolves and Liverpool is set to take place in the week commencing January 16.
