FC Barcelona manager Xavi hailed Frenkie de Jong as one of the best midfielders in the world after the Netherlands international impressed for the Catalan outfit in their 1-0 win over Athletic Club in La Liga.
Barcelona restored their nine-point lead at the top of the La Liga points table with their narrow win over Athletic Club. Raphinha’s goal on the stroke of halftime earned Barcelona all three points from the fixture.
Frenkie de Jong was one of Barcelona’s standout players as the Catalan behemoths got the better of Athletic Bilbao. Speaking after Barcelona defeated Athletic Bilbao, Xavi was full of praise for De Jong.
Frenkie de Jong has established himself as a key player for Barcelona. The 25-year-old was linked with a move away from Barcelona last summer with Manchester United interested in the services of the midfielder.
Manchester United had identified Frenkie de Jong as a transfer target and were linked with a move for the Dutchman for much of the 2022 summer transfer window. But De Jong wanted to stay in Barcelona. And he remained a player of the Catalan outfit when the 2022 summer transfer window closed.
Frenkie de Jong recently spoke about his Barcelona future, revealing he wants to continue playing for the Catalan outfit. The Dutch midfielder also said he had known he would stay at Barcelona last summer.
Meanwhile, Frenkie de Jong has featured in 33 games across all competitions for Barcelona so far this season. Although he has only three G/A for Barcelona this season, he has been more important than those stats suggest.
23 of De Jong’s appearances this season have come in La Liga, where Barcelona sit at the summit.
Barcelona will take on fierce rivals Real Madrid in a La Liga fixture in their next game. If Barcelona defeats Real Madrid in that game, they will extend the lead in La Liga to 12 points.
