Manchester United News: Agent Explains Difficulties Dealing With Man UTD Compared to Man City and Liverpool
After several unsuccessful attempts, the Red Devils suddenly signed Casemiro of Real Madrid. After a protracted transfer process that lasted more than three months this summer, United ultimately decided against trying to sign Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona.
Then United focused on Adrien Rabiot of Juventus, only to back out of a deal when the Frenchman wouldn’t compromise on his enormous wage demands. United is once again in a race before the deadline with just a little more than a week before the summer window closes.
It’s an all too often occurrence, and those who have done business with the club think it’s scarcely shocking.
One agent stated: “Even to do what should be a simple contract, you find yourself needing to speak to at least three different people” in an article written by The Athletic.
“You look at Manchester City or Liverpool; you can see their organisational structure and who does what. At United, I don’t observe any of it. It appears to be hectic behind the scenes, as people have claimed.
With the addition of transfer head John Murtough and technical director Darren Fletcher, United has attempted to bring some structure to its hierarchy.
Director of football negotiations Matt Judge was formerly in charge of handling transfer negotiations. However, he submitted his letter of resignation in April.
Ed Woodward, a former executive vice chairman who was recently replaced in his position by Richard Arnold. He is rumoured to have participated actively in transfer conversations.
In contrast to the effective procedures that have paved the way for Man City and Liverpool’s success, United’s recruitment strategy has come under fire for lacking coordinated thinking and adopting a scattergun approach with no genuine plan in place.
Several different sporting directors have been connected to United in recent years. The list includes Sevilla director Monchi, former Ajax boss Marc Overmars, former United goalkeeper and current Ajax chief executive Edwin van der Sar, and former Tottenham recruitment chief Paul Mitchell.
Another agent commented on United’s organisational structure by saying, “There’s still no actual sporting director. In Monaco, I’m aware that Paul Mitchell was given a look. He has performed well everywhere he has been.”
“They require someone with that level of adaptability to enter the situation. It is an entire reconstruction. I think they only completely rebuild some things. After each partial reconstruction, another.”
Perhaps this explains why United has been unsuccessful in a number of attempts over the years. Players like Haaland and Jude Bellingham chose to stay at Borussia Dortmund to advance their careers. On the other hand, players like Ben Chilwell and Jack Grealish moved to direct competitors.
