Queen Elizabeth News: English Premier League’s weekend matches are cancelled
Born in 1926, Queen Elizabeth II became the Queen of the United Kingdom on 6th February 1952.
Her reign lasted over 70 years. The Queen was the longest reigning monarch of the country before passing away at her residence in Balmoral. Her eldest son and heir of the crown Prince Charles will now be the King of the United Kingdom.
With the death of the Queen, England have now entered a period of official mourning. It has been announced that her funeral will take place within a fortnight.
English Premier League have decided to cancel all the football matches in the league. This will serve as a tribute to England’s longest-reigning monarch.
The decision comes after the publication of official guidance which clearly indicates that there are no obligations for the sports authorities to cancel their fixtures. However, they have still left the decision to the sports authorities.
Soon after that in a meeting with all the clubs, Premier League decided to cancel all the matches this weekend.
While speaking about the decision, Premier League’s chief executive, Richard Masters explained, “We and our clubs would like to pay tribute to Her Majesty’s long and unwavering service to our country. As our longest-serving monarch, she has been an inspiration and leaves behind an incredible legacy following a life of dedication.”
He further added how Queen Elizabeth was admired by all people from the world. He has asked everyone to join the mourning.
Meanwhile, every other football match in England including EFL matches, Women’s Super League matches and even the grassroots matches will not take place.
The Scottish Football Association have decided to cancel all the football matches in Scotland in honour of the Queen.
The Irish Football Association have also announced that all football in North Ireland of this weekend will not happen.
Apart from football, many other sporting actions including St Leger horse racing at Doncaster will not take place at the scheduled time.
Meanwhile, the England Wales Cricket Board will soon take a decision on England’s third test against South Africa.
