Lionel Messi Compelled to Wear Black Robe to Lift the FIFA World Cup
Lionel Messi was the star of the night as he scored two goals in the final game of the World Cup. After a nail-biting climax in the penalty shoot-out, Argentina lifted the trophy for the third time in football history. The world cup was the only remaining dream on the checklist of the legend, which he has finally achieved.
However, as Lionel Messi went forward onto the podium to collect the trophy, he was handed a black and gold robe by the Emir of Qatar. BBC commentator Guy Mowbray puts this act as ‘ the crowning’ of a real football king.
While this action raised controversy among fans, According to Indian Express, Bisht is a royalty garment in Qatar. It is a robe made of camel hair and ‘goat’ wool (Yes, pun intended!). Bisht is worn in the Arab community on exceptional, special events.
Messi then received the trophy and he went over to his team members to celebrate one of the most memorable occasions in football history. However, the Bisht covered Messi’s blue and white Argentine jersey partially.
Former English footballer Gary Lineker seemed upset and raged after this incident took place. He also described the scenes of the Lusail stadium as amazing and magnificent. Meanwhile, this victory marked Argentina’s third World Cup achievement- 1978, 1986, and 2022.
“It seems a shame, in a way, that they’ve covered up Messi in his Argentina shirt”
Former Argentina Defender Pablo Zabaleta also jumped into the controversy. He saw no reason to make Messi wear the black robe. FIFA president Gianni Infantino was also present beside Messi as Emir draped the black robe over Messi. Alan Shearer also joked about the act stating it seemed like Infantino was also in it.
However, soon after lifting the trophy and the team photo, Messi got rid of the black and gold robe. Further, he wore an Argentine jersey with three stars on it- conveying the third World Cup title.
English Commentator Gary Neville was one of the many who ran out of words to praise Messi after the match. Argentina defeating France in the finals has completed the portfolio of Messi, adding the World Cup to his name.
