Erik Ten Hag Tells Manchester United Players to Perform Like Robots
Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag has told his players to act like robots and machines and said those who do not show enough hunger and desire are in the wrong place.
Manchester United are now without a win in their last three Premier League fixture. The Old Trafford suffered a heavy 7-0 defeat to Liverpool, then shared points with Southampton after a goalless draw, and then fell to a defeat to Newcastle United in their last three matches in the English top-flight.
Speaking ahead of their upcoming Premier League match against Brentford, Erik ten Hag said that the Manchester United players who don’t show the requisite desire and hunger are in the wrong place.
“I agree, we return to old [bad] habits but also that I know there are fluctuations, and because persons are not robots. But we have to act as robots, we have to act as machines, and we have to expect and can expect the demand of our players that they match the standards. So, when we are not doing [well] we are disappointed because that is our job.”
He added: “So, Sunday we return to bad habits and you get hammered and they know this, the players know this. So, they talked with each other about it because they are aware this is not the standard for a Manchester United team.”
Erik ten Hag also said that despite the recent setbacks Manchester United are in the right direction. He said: “Let’s be fair, so I know how football is. We’re talking about the emotion after one defeat but we are in the right position and this squad is doing that you can talk about deficits but every squad has deficits.
“But I trust my players to give good performances and get the best results. They have shown it so many times: Arsenal home, Liverpool home, City home, but also Barcelona twice. So they can do it, so don’t talk about what is coming after, after strong and severe decisions. So I trust my players and they deserve it.
“We are in the right position. But now, at the start of the season, we had a really bad start. When you go to Newcastle and, as a team, you deliver this, it is far below the standards and far below the performance we can expect.”
