Antoine Griezmann’s Brace Ensures All Three Points for Atletico Madrid
french forward Antoine Griezmann scored a brilliant brace for the visiting side while Nabil Fekir netted one goal for Real Betis.
Atletico Madrid were coming to the match with a 1-1 draw against Rayo Vallecano. Diego Simeone’s team wanted to return back into winning ways. They were facing a Real Betis side who has played brilliant football throughout the season.
Simeone deployed a 4-4-2 setup. Jan Oblack started under the goal. Nahuel Molina, Stefan Savic, Jose Maria Gimenez and Reinildo completed the back four. Geoffrey Kondogbia and Axel Witsel started in the base of the midfield. Saul Niguez and Angel Correa started as the wide midfielders. Alvaro Morata and Antoine Griezmann formed the two-man forward line.
The home side Real Betis had a better start to the match. They did not let Atletico Madrid have a single shot on target in the first half.
However, Pellegirini’s team also failed to create much for themselves. The first half ended with a scoreline of 0-0. Then soon after the restart Real Betis winger Luiz Henrique found the back of the net. His goal however was cancelled by VAR due to offside infringement.
Atletico Madrid then came very close to opening the scoreline when Angel Correa unleashed a powerful strike. But Betis substitute Victor Luiz blocked the shot and a sure goal.
Atleti however did not have to wait much for the goal. Following Luiz’s block, Atleti were awarded a corner. Antoine Grizzmann then stepped up and scored an Olympic goal to give Atletico Madrid the lead.
After getting the goal, Atleti looked much more composed and they were now creating decent chances. Finally, in the 71st minute, Matheus Cunha found Griezmann in a very good position. The Frenchman scored his second goal of the match to give Atletico Madrid a two-goal lead.
Nabil Fekir pulled one back for the home side with a perfectly placed free kick at the top right corner. Betis then rallied to get the equaliser. They came very close through Aitor Ruibal who wasted a golden opportunity. Soon after that, Alex Moreno failed to take an opportunity as the match ended with a scoreline of 2-1 in Atletico Madrid’s favour.
Following this win, Atletico Madrid are currently in the third position in the La Liga table. They now have twenty-three points from the first eleven matches. Atletico Madrid will face Bayer Leverkusen in their next match.
Meanwhile, Real Betis are now in the fifth position with twenty points from eleven matches. Betis will face Ludogorates Razgrad in their next outing.
