Chelsea Intend to Sign Wolves Right-Back Nelson Semedo
Nelson Semedo started his football journey in the academy of Sintrense. The fullback then graduated from the Sintrense academy and was promoted to the main team.
He played one season for the club and then joined Portuguese giants Benfica. Semedo played three years for Benfica’s reserve team before finally getting his chance with the main squad. After his promotion to the senior team, Semedo won back-to-back Primeira Liga titles.
The Portuguese defender then joined Barcelona on a five-year deal in the summer of 2017. Semedo won two La Liga titles with the Blaugrana. However, he failed to cement his spot in the squad. Finally, the fullback joined English premier league side Wolverhampton Wanderers for a fee of €30 million.
Chelsea’s starting right-back Reece James suffered an injury during a UEFA Champions League match against Italian side Serie-A. Since then, the fullback has been sidelined. he is going to be out for a long time.
In Reece James’ absence Chelsea gaffer Graham Potter had to play Cesar Azpilicueta, Ruben Loftus Cheek, Raheem Sterling and Cristian Pulisic in that right-wing back role. This shows how thin they are currently in the right back position.
Hence, Chelsea want to sign a new right-back who can become a good backup for Reece James. Now their target Nelson Semedo’s contract with Wolves is going to expire at the end of the season. Although Wolves have the option to extend his contract, it is not sure if they are going to exercise it.
Semedo in recent weeks has lost his place in the Wolves lineup. The full-back has made only four starts this season. With, Wolves languishing in the relegation zone, he will surely accept a move to Chelsea.
Known for his pace, ball control, dribbling and crossing, Nelson Semedo is an ideal player for Graham Potter’s team. He can play as a both right-back and also as a right wing-back. His inclusion will surely give Chelsea some much-needed depth in that position.
Chelsea signed English manager Graham Potter to replace their Champions League-winning manager Thomas Tuchel. Since joining the club, Potter has done well. Under him, Chelsea have qualified for the round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League. They are also well within the race for the top four of EPL.
Chelsea however suffered a shocking loss against Graham Potter’s former team Brighton in their last match. Now they will face GNK Dinamo Zagreb in their next match.
