Chelsea Transfer News: Blues Nearing Agreement to Sign Wesley Fofana
Chelsea transfer news: The Blues’ move for Leicester City defender Wesley Fofana is finally set to be completed.
While they did sign Kalidou Koulibaly and Marc Cucurella, Thomas Tuchel is looking to further reinforce their defence.
Chelsea saw their first three bids – of £50m, £60m, £70m – for Fofana rejected by Leicester City. However, the two teams are now nearing agreement over the transfer of the highly-rated French defender.
There were reports Leicester would demand in excess of £80m for Fofana. That would have made Fofana the most expensive defender in the world. However, Leicester’s stance appears to have softened.
Should Leicester accept Chelsea’s latest bid for Fofana, that would still make him one of the most expensive defenders in the world. Fofana also wants to leave for Chelsea and has told Leicester City of the same.
Fofana was also dropped from the Leicester squad for their previous two games amid Chelsea links. He also does not feature in the Foxes squad for their next Premier League match, against Chelsea.
Fofana has been playing for Leicester since joining the Premier League side from French outfit Saint-Étienne in 2020. The 21-year-old has since featured in 52 games for the Midlands club.
Fofana made 38 appearances for Leicester City in his first season at the club. 28 of those appearances came in the English top-flight.
Fofana could only make 12 appearances for Brendan Rodgers’ side last season, with an injury ruling him out of action for several months.
The French centre-back had also featured in Leicester’s first two Premier League games this season. He started in both and played throughout as Leicester shared points in their first match and succumbed to a defeat in their second.
Should Chelsea seal the deal for Fofana, he will become their seventh signing of the summer. The Stamford Bridge outfit have already signed Raheem Sterling, Kalidou Koulibaly, Marc Cucurella, Carney Chukwuemeka, Cesare Casadei, and Gabriel Slonina. Of those Slonina has been loaned back to Chicago Fire, the club where Chelsea signed him from.
