David de Gea has rejected Manchester United’s first offer of a new contract extension, according to a report in The Athletic.

David de Gea last renewed his contract with Manchester United in 2019 when he signed a deal that runs until 2023. Although there is an option to extend his contract by another 12 months, Manchester United have not exercised that option.

Manchester United are reportedly looking to agree on a new deal that would see David de Gea lower his salary. The Spanish goalkeeper’s current salary is £390,000 per week, which makes him Man Utd’s highest-paid player and also the highest-paid goalkeeper in the world.

Manchester United reportedly made a good contract extension proposal to David de Gea, but the Spaniard found the offer unsatisfactory at this point. De Gea wants to stay at Manchester United but feels the remuneration offered to him should reflect his importance to the squad.

However, the 32-year-old goalkeeper recognizes that he must accept a reduction in his salary to extend his stay at the Old Trafford outfit beyond the current campaign. The Athletic also reports that Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has given his blessing to De Gea to extend his stay at the club.

David de Gea, meanwhile, has appeared in 42 games across all competitions for Manchester United so far in the current campaign. He has generally been impressive for the Red Devils, although his passing abilities have at times been criticized.

Meanwhile, Manchester United will resume their campaign after the March international break with a Premier League fixture against Newcastle United. The Red Devils sit third in the Premier League table and will be aiming to seal a top-four finish this season.

They also remain in contention for the FA Cup and Europa League titles. Man Utd, who have already won the EFL Cup, have qualified for the semi-final of the FA Cup and the quarter-final of the Europa League.
