Diego Simeone Insists He Will Not Leave Atletico Madrid After CL Exit
Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has insisted he will not leave the club after the Spanish side were knocked out of the Champions League.
The La Liga outfit took on Bayern Leverkusen in their fifth match of the Champions League 22/23 group stage. They needed a win to keep their chances of progression to the Champions League round-of-16 alive.
But Atletico Madrid failed to earn all three points as they instead settled for a draw. They could have won the game in the injury time when referee awarded them a penalty after Leverkusen handled the ball inside the box.
Yannick Carrasco, who had scored Ateltico’s first goal of the match, stepped up to take the penalty but his effort was saved. Saul Nigez’s header from the rebound then hit the crossbar as the win eluded Atletico Madrid.
Speaking after the match, Simeone insisted he will not leave Atletico Madrid. The Argentine tactician said he will stay on at the club to deliver things they need, such as Champions League glory.
Simeone also described the moment as the hardest as Atletico Madrid, for just the second time in the last 10 years, failed to qualify for the round of 16.
The result of their match against Bayer Leverkusen leaves them third in Group B with five points from five matches. The Spanish side has a win, two draws, and two defeats in the Champions League this season.
They are five points behind Club Brugge, who top Group B with 10 points. Atletico are also four points short of Porto, who sit second with nine points. With just one match remaining for them in the competition, Atletico won’t be able to bridge the gap between the top two sides.
Had they won against Leverkusen, Atletico Madrid would have had seven points from five matches. That would leave them just two points behind Porto, who they face in their final match of the group stage.
Atletico are eight points behind table-toppers Real Madrid and five points short of Barcelona, who sit second.
