Edson Alvarez Disappointed at Ajax’s Decision to Block Chelsea Move

Edson Alvarez has said he is disappointed at Ajax’s decision to block him from joining Chelsea in the previous summer transfer window.

Chelsea attempted to land Alvarez from Ajax late in the summer transfer window. However, Ajax stood their ground and refused to sanction an exit for the 25-year-old, having already seen a number of key players leave in the summer transfer window.

Among the players who left Ajax in the summer transfer window were Antony, Lisandro Martinez and Ryan Gravenberch. Manchester United landed both Antony and Lisandro Martinez in the summer, reuniting the duo with Erik ten Hag, who also left Ajax to become the Red Devils’ manager.

Gravenberch, meanwhile, left Ajax to sign for Bundesliga behemoths Bayern Munich in the 2022 summer transfer window. Ajax did not want to lose another important player and hence blocked Alvarez from joining Chelsea.

Alvarez has now revealed his disappointment at the Dutch outfit’s decision to not sanction an exit for him in the summer transfer window.

However, he is convinced a big club will come calling for him in the January transfer window or next summer. He also insisted he is focused on Ajax at the moment.

I am very disappointed about it. But I am convinced that one day another big club will come for me. This winter, or in the summer. For now, I can only focus on Ajax.

Meanwhile, Alvarez’s current contract with Ajax runs until 2025. The 25-year-old midfielder has featured in 16 matches across all competitions for Ajax so far this season.

Alvarez has made 10 appearances for Ajax in the Eredivisie and has registered two assists so far this season in the Dutch top-flight.

He has also appeared in five games for Ajax in the Champions League and has scored a goal.

Alvarez is likely to attract transfer interest in the future, with Man Utd and Chelsea among clubs rumoured to be keen on the Mexican international.
