Erik ten Hag Provides Lisandro Martinez & Raphael Varane Injury Update
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag provided an update on defenders Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez, who were both withdrawn during their 2-2 draw with Sevilla due to injuries.
Manchester United hosted Sevilla at Old Trafford in the first leg of the Europa League quarter-finals. The Red Devils got off to a flying start and were 2-0 inside the first 21 minutes.
However, the Premier League ended the game on a disappointing note as a late capitulation saw Sevilla score two goals to leave the tie in the balance. Manchester United also saw Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez suffer injuries in the game in what is surely a huge blow for the Old Trafford outfit.
Manchester United replaced Raphael Varane at the start of the second half after the Frenchman picked up a knock towards the end of the first half. Harry Maguire replaced Varane.
Lisandro Martinez, meanwhile, picked up an injury in the final 10 minutes of the normal time. He was helped off the field by his international teammates Marcos Acuna and Gonzalo Montiel.
Speaking at the post-match press conference, Erik ten Hag also ruled out an Achilles injury for Lisandro Martinez. He said: “I cannot tell what it is, but is not an Achilles. I have spoken with him and he is okay and he is calm.“
He added: “I think [it is] an injury [that means] he will not play on Sunday. I cannot say what the diagnosis [is]. I prefer to wait and to know what it is.”
Providing an update on Raphael Varane, Erik ten Hag said: “That injury, he complained [about it] over the last couple of weeks and we have to see how it is now.”
Manchester United will be hoping the injuries Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane have picked up are not serious. The duo form Erik Ten Hag’s preferred centre-back partnership, and it would be a huge blow for Manchester United if they are ruled out for a longer period.
