Erik ten Hag: We Need Outstanding Players at Manchester United
Erik ten Hag has said Manchester United needs outstanding players, seemingly urging the club hierarchy to back him in the summer transfer window of 2023.
Manchester United were without Casemiro and Christian Eriksen in midfield against Newcastle United, and the Old Trafford outfit were far from their best against the Magpies. Two second-half goals saw Newcastle United inflict a defeat on Manchester United and leapfrog Erik Ten Hag and co. to third in the points table.
Speaking ahead of Manchester United’s upcoming Premier League match against Brentford, Erik Ten Hag said Manchester United needs outstanding players.
“If you have injuries, you need replacements and competition, especially if you want to compete in four competitions.”
In their defeat to Newcastle United, Manchester United had Scott McTominay and Marcel Sabitzer in the midfield. Neither of McTominay nor Sabitzer are regular starters at Manchester United.
Wout Weghorst started up front for Manchester United against Newcastle United. The Netherlands international has been a regular starter for Manchester United since his loan move to the Old Trafford outfit from Burnley in January. But Man Utd have little option in that department, with Anthony Martial injured.
Weghorst has only scored two goals for Manchester United in 19 appearances, which shows the Red Devils might need to dip their toes into the summer market for a new striker.
Meanwhile, Manchester United currently sits fifth in the Premier League points table. They have 50 points from 27 matches in the English top flight so far this season. They are tied on points with fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur, who have played two games more than the Red Devils.
Manchester United are also tied on points with Newcastle United, but the Magpies edge the Red Devils to third place courtesy of superior goal difference.
