Harry Kane to Not Wear Onelove Armband in Fifa World Cup 2022
This edition of the World Cup is very unique. For the first time ever in the history of the FIFA World Cup, a middle eastern nation in Qatar are hosting this huge event.
From the beginning, Qatar have been hugely criticised for its conservative rules. This has made things difficult for many fans to visit the country, especially those people who belong to the LGBTQ+ community.
Qatar as a country has strict rules against the LGBTQ+ community. So to fight against this unjust law, many football nations including England decided to use rainbow-colored OneLove armbands. This OneLove armband represents the LGBTQ+ community.
English captain Harry Kane will not wear the OneLove armband as England face Iran in their first match of the FIFA World Cup 2022.
The OneLove armband was meant to be worn to respect the LGBTQ+ community. But a recent statement from Football Association states that FIFA has decided to put sporting sanctions if any country decides to wear the armband.
“FIFA has been very clear that it will impose sporting sanctions if our captains wear the armbands on the field of play,” the statement from FA reads
It further adds, “As national federations, we can’t put our players in a position where they could face sporting sanctions including bookings, so we have asked the captains not to attempt to wear the armbands in FIFA World Cup games.”
England’s neighbours Wales have also decided to not use the OneLove armband in the FIFA World Cup 2022. The Wales Federation spoke about the same issue as the reason for it.
Apart from England and Wales, another European giant Netherlands made a u-turn from their decision to wear the OneLove armband. This recent turn of events have come as a shock for a huge portion of the football fanbase.
Earlier English captain Harry Kane spoke about the necessity for wearing the OneLove armband. England gaffer Gareth Southgate then seconded him and confirmed their decision.
But with FIFA’s strong decision, they will not be able to do so.
