Inigo Martinez Responds to Barcelona Rumours
Born in Ondarroa, Inigo Martinez started his career at the academy of Aurrera Ondarroa. However, he then joined La Liga club Real Sociedad’s youth setup.
The defender then graduated from the Real Sociedad academy and was promoted to the main team. Inigo Martinez gradually became one of the most important players for the Real Sociedad setup.
The defender played seven years for Sociedad before finally joining their Basque rivals Athletic Bilbao in the January transfer window of 2018. Since then Martinez has been an integral part of the Bilbao side. Inigo Martinez has also represented Spain in the international arena.
Catalan giants Barcelona have been linked with Spanish international Inigo Martinez from the start of the season. But throughout the summer they failed to secure him and then signed Jules Kounde from Sevilla.
Then another report suggested that Barcelona have asked the centre-back to run down his contract so they can sign him for free the next summer. But suddenly when Gerard Pique announced his retirement, the rumours got more fuel.
And now finally, Inigo Martinez has decided to break his silence about all this. The Athletic Bilbao defender told that he is comfortable with his current club but also not sure where he will play after the end of his contract.
“The negotiations are there, the issue is being handled by my representatives, doing the best for me and for Athletic,” added Inigo Martinez.
Gerard Pique has been one of the biggest names for Barcelona throughout his career. Although the former Spanish international has not featured much this season, it will be a very big task for the Catalan giants to replace the defender.
31-year-old Inigo Martinez is still in his prime. The defender has been often compared with another Barcelona legend Carlos Puyol for his heading ability and leadership quality. Inigo is also a left-footed centre-back which is currently missing in Barcelona’s setup.
So obviously if Barcelona can add him, he can become a very good asset for them.
