Jurgen Klopp Reacts to Darwin Nunez’s Shocking Miss vs Ajax

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp suggested even Darwin Nunez was surprised after the Uruguayan international missed a sitter during the Reds’ win over Ajax in the Champions League.

Liverpool took on Ajax in their latest fixture in the Champions League, and the Merseyside outfit secured a 3-0 win over the Dutch outfit. The win also meant Liverpool have now sealed their place in the Champions League round of 16.

Liverpool opened the scoring through Mohamed Salah, who dinked the ball over the Ajax goalkeeper after Jordan Henderson had sent a delicious cross into the box.

The Reds came close to scoring their second and they should have when Roberto Firmino passed the ball to Nunez, who had an empty net in front of him. But the 23-year-old’s shot hit the post and came back into play.

Speaking after the match, Klopp was asked about Nunez’s shocking miss. The Liverpool manager suggested even Nunez was surprised to see him miss the target after receiving the ball from Firmino.

Nunez, though, would go on to redeem himself in the second half, scoring Liverpool’s second goal of the match. He got on to the end of Andy Robertson’s corner kick and headed the ball into the net to make it 2-0 for Liverpool.

Napoli have 15 points, having won all matches they have played in the competition so far this season. That includes a 4-1 win over Liverpool in their Champions League 22/23 opener.

Meanwhile, Liverpool languishes at eighth in the Premier League points table with 16 points from 11 matches. The Reds have four wins, four draws, and three defeats in the English top-flight this season.

Liverpool are 12 points behind table-toppers Arsenal, who have 28 points from 11 matches. The Reds are also five-points short of fourth-placed Newcastle United, who have played a game more than Klopp’s men have.
