Kylian Mbappe has revealed that he spoke to Antoine Griezmann, who was overlooked in favour of the Paris Saint-Germain star for the captaincy of France’s national football team.
Didier Deschamps recently named Kylian Mbappe as the new captain of France national football team after Hugo Lloris – the team’s previous captain – announced his retirement from international football.
The decision to name Kylian Mbappe as France’s captain reportedly disappointed Antoine Griezmann, who is one of the most senior players in the team. Speaking ahead of France’s UEFA EURO Qualifiers match against the Netherlands, Mbappe revealed he has cleared the air with Griezmann.
Kylian Mbappe revealed that Antoine Griezmann was disappointed over the captaincy decision, but insisted that is understandable. Mbappe also described Griezmann as ‘perhaps the most important player of the Deschamps era’.
“I’m not his boss. We are going to be hand in hand, he and I, to try to make this French team reign worldwide. If he has something to say to the group, I sit and listen. You don’t have to close the door to anyone, everyone is free to express themselves.”
Meanwhile, Kylian Mbappe was impressive for France at FIFA World Cup 2022, where they finished as runners-up. France, who were the defending champions, fell to a defeat to Argentina in the penalty shootout after the two sides remained locked in a draw at the end of normal time and extra time.
Kylian Mbappe, who racked up eight goals at Qatar 2022, bagged a hat-trick in the final against Argentina, but it was not enough for them to defeat the eventual champions.
Since making his debut for France in 2017, Kylian Mbappe has so far appeared in 66 matches for the national football team. He has also racked up an impressive total of 36 goals in those matches.
Meanwhile, France’s upcoming match against the Netherlands will kick off at 1:15 am Indian Standard Time on March 25.
